Your Speech Therapy Questions, Answered

If you're wondering whether your child needs speech therapy, or what working with Little Hive actually looks like, you're in the right place. Here are the questions Houston parents ask most.

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

Trust your gut. If your child is hard to understand, has fewer words than other kids their age, seems to struggle to follow directions, or gets frustrated trying to communicate, it is worth an evaluation. Parents are almost never wrong when they feel something is off, and early support is the best predictor of quick progress.

What ages do you work with?

Little Hive works with toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-aged children, roughly ages 18 months through 10 years. Many families reach out between ages 2 and 4, when language is developing quickly and small delays are easiest to address.

Should I wait and see if my child catches up?

Some kids do catch up on their own, but there is no reliable way to know which ones. Waiting rarely hurts a child who is fine, but it can cost months for a child who needs support. An evaluation gives you a clear answer either way, and if everything looks on track, you get peace of mind.

Do you come to my home?

Yes. Sessions happen where your child is most comfortable: your home, their daycare, or their preschool. Little Hive serves Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, The Heights, Memorial, Spring Branch, Briargrove, West University, River Oaks, and surrounding Houston neighborhoods. Teletherapy is available anywhere in Texas.

Can you work with my child at daycare or preschool?

Absolutely. With the school's permission, Kathryn can see your child during the day so therapy does not compete with naps, dinner, or your work schedule. She also shares quick notes with teachers when it helps carry over skills into the classroom.

Do you accept insurance?

Little Hive Speech Co. is private pay. That means no waitlists, no session caps set by an insurance company, and a plan built entirely around your child. Superbills are available upon request, so you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Do I need a referral from my pediatrician?

No referral is needed to get started with an evaluation or therapy. If you would like Kathryn to coordinate with your pediatrician, she is glad to.

How long are sessions and how often do we meet?

Sessions are 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on your child's age and goals. Most children are seen one to two times per week. Kathryn will recommend a schedule after the evaluation.

How long will my child need therapy?

It depends on the child and the goal. A single speech sound might take a few months. Multiple sound patterns or broader language delays often take longer, sometimes a year or more, because there's simply more to work through. Kathryn reviews progress regularly and tells you honestly when it's time to reduce sessions or graduate.

Will I be involved in therapy?

Yes, and it makes a big difference. You will get simple strategies after each session so practice can happen naturally during meals, bath time, and play. Parent coaching sessions are also available if you want more hands-on guidance.

How do I get started?

Fill out the contact form or email kathryn@littlehivespeechco.com. Kathryn will reach out to learn a bit about your child, send intake paperwork, and schedule the evaluation. Most families are up and running within a couple of weeks.
